Logistics & Marine

The purpose of the SDAG Logistics & Marine Division is to provide and manage the strategy, rules, and technical requirements and to provide air and sea support during the Phase 1 period of design, subsea operations, drilling, construction, and production.

The huge distances, remoteness of the project areas, severe weather conditions, tight delivery schedules, delivery of concrete coated pipes, continuous loading and unloading, heavy equipment, together with shipping and storage, are the major logistical challenges that face the SDAG Logistics & Marine Division.

Planning of the Shtokman logistics base:

  • The logistics base will be designed with sufficient expansion capacity to accommodate the future Shtokman development phases 2 and 3.
  • Design is based on the concept of an integrated base that will provide facilities also for future SDAG contractors.

This approach will allow Shtokman to:

  • Increase efficiency by having all parties located at the same site
  • Obtain immediate responses from contractors
  • Apply cost & time effective solutions to minimize logistics problems

The integrated logistics base will include:

  • Various warehouses & workshops:
    • Drilling/production/cement & chemicals/lubricants/hazardous goods, etc.
    • MWD/SPS/completion/mechanical & electrical repair, etc.
  • Mud & cement preparation facilities
  • Jetties and berthing facilities
  • Offices & accommodations
  • Hoisting & conveying equipment:
    • Heavy lift equipment
    • Cranes / forklifts / trailers / trucks

Marine transport and activities

All Shtokman field vessels will be designed for:

  • Highly maneuverability / stationkeeping (DP2 as minimum)
  • Operational capability in harsh conditions (winterization class, de-icing, icebreaking)
  • Capability Arc 7 (DNV Ice 10 to 15 icebreaker class)
  • Mutual replaceability, each vessel being capable of taking over another's basic safety-related duties (FIFI II, rescue craft)
  • Environmental friendliness, low emission levels
  • Minimized exposure of crew and cargo to harsh weather

Shtokman field vessels:

  • Platform supply vessels
  • Anchor handling tugs (FPU towing, ice and iceberg deflection)
  • Multi role support Vessel (ROV, ice sentinel, maintenance, survey, ice deflection, etc.)
  • Emergency response vessels (safety / firefighting / rescue vessels)

Ice monitoring Vessels:

  • Reconnaissance icebreaker
  • Primary icebreaker
  • Sentinel vessel (function to be performed by a multi-role vessel)

Air Transport

The main functions of the helicopter/fixed wing aircraft are:

  • Passenger and urgent cargo transportation
  • Emergency response, including Medevac
  • VIP transportation flights
  • Passengers and urgent cargo transportation between onshore and offshore helipads, including helipads on vessels
  • Emergency response, including SAR and Medevac
  • Ice survey flights
  • VIP offshore and onshore flights
  • Passengers and urgent cargo transportation between shore and offshore locations, including the vessels;
  • Emergency Response, including SAR and Medevac;
  • Ice survey flights;
  • VIP offshore and onshore flights.

The main challenges:

  • Extreme polar climate conditions
  • Numbers of people for offshore transportation
  • Flight crew training

The investments in logistics in the project areas will have a long-term positive impact on sustainable development of the Barents Sea region, boosting employment and the regional economy.
